High performance batteries from Germany for Maritime Applications: Market Launch of the New TRION T-Rex Battery

Itzehoe/Ottendorf-Okrilla, October 2025 – With the launch of its new TRION ‘T-Rex’ battery, TRION Battery GmbH is ushering in a new era of high-performance energy solutions for the marine industry. Developed and fully manufactured in Germany near Dresden, the T-Rex series combines the robustness, safety, and longevity of state-of-the-art lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology with exceptional power output – perfectly tailored for versatile use at sea and in port.

The TRION T-Rex battery was specifically designed to meet the demanding requirements of maritime applications. Whether as a reliable energy source for onboard electronics, a starter battery for powerful engines, or as a robust supply system for electric bow thrusters and anchor winches – the TRION T-Rex delivers consistent performance under all conditions.

“Over the past months, we have tested our batteries under the toughest conditions in close cooperation with independent institutes and compared them against competitors. We are confident that we are setting new benchmarks in this field,” says Jens Simmank, Managing Director of TRION Battery GmbH. “Equally important: our batteries aren’t built for calm conditions but to perform in the toughest conditions on the water – with extreme temperature variations, waterproof, and high peak-power demands such as engine starts. The T-Rex is the ideal solution: combining high peak power and energy density, extreme cycle life, and unmatched safety. And from cell to pack it’s really Made in Germany.”

Technology with Depth

The foundation of the T-Rex series is lithium iron phosphate (LFP) – a cell chemistry proven worldwide for its outstanding safety, stability, and reliability.

Unlike conventional high-energy lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles or consumer electronics, which prioritize energy density, TRION focuses on high-power applications requiring short bursts of very high current. These applications have traditionally relied on lead-acid batteries – a technology capable of delivering peak power but with significant disadvantages in terms of lifespan, efficiency, and charging speed.

This is where TRION sets a new standard: its proprietary high-power LFP cells can complete full charge and discharge cycles in less than 15 minutes at the cell level, and under one hour at the battery level.

TRION uses a large-format pouch-cell design, which clearly distinguishes itself from common cylindrical or prismatic cells. This design allows for extremely fast charge and discharge rates while minimizing the risk of thermal instability. The high-performance cells are manufactured at the facility near Dresden, and then assembled into customized modules and battery packs tailored to specific applications.

The first production model, the TRION T-Rex battery, is a dual-purpose LFP battery in the Group 31 format. While conventional Group 31 batteries are typically either lead-acid units designed for high cranking currents or high-energy LFP batteries optimized for longer runtimes, TRION’s solution combines both characteristics in one system: delivering high peak power and sustained energy output, all certified under UN 38.3 safety standards. Production takes place on fully automated, state-of-the-art manufacturing lines.

Strong, Safe, Sustainable

Key benefits of the TRION T-Rex battery at a glance:

  • Maximum safety: Thermally stable LFP cell technology.
  • Long lifespan: Exceptional cycle life, even under deep discharge conditions.
  • High performance: Ideal for high starting currents such as boat engines, bow thrusters, and winches.
  • Fast charging: Full charge in under one hour.
  • Maintenance-free and robust: Shock- and vibration-resistant, optimized for marine environments.
  • Sustainably produced: cell to pack developed and manufactured in Germany.

“With the T-Rex battery, we offer boat owners and shipyards a reliable energy solution for virtually every onboard application,” explains Timothy Mayne, CEO of the TRION Battery Technologies Group. “Our manufacturing in Germany is a cornerstone of our quality philosophy – precision you can rely on in every situation.”

Market and Mission

TRION’s overarching mission is to accelerate the transformation of global energy systems through next-generation battery technologies. While current operations focus on German production, the company is also advancing the commercialization of its silicon-anode technology, which will enable even higher energy densities in the future.

With the launch of the T-Rex battery, TRION is specifically targeting the German marine and leisure markets – a segment with strong growth potential and increasing demand for durable, reliable energy storage. In the future, TRION will extend its high-performance LFP cell technology to additional sectors, including commercial vehicles, lifting platforms, defense applications, and data center backup systems.
